In His Care: His Holiness The Dalai Lama and Tibetan Survival

I have often reflected on the profound impact His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama has had on the Tibetan community. While many younger generations may know him primarily as a spiritual leader, I believe it is essential to recognize that his contributions to the survival and success of the Tibetan people in exile extend far beyond spiritual guidance.

Navigating the Turbulence

In October 1950, when the Chinese People’s Liberation Army invaded Tibet, our people faced severe cultural repression and economic hardships. At just 16 years old, His Holiness the Dalai Lama assumed political power, navigating this challenging landscape with remarkable courage. It is difficult for me to imagine the immense responsibility that rested on his young shoulders at such a tumultuous time.

In 1959, Chinese rule forced His Holiness the Dalai Lama to flee to India. Despite his young age, he took on the enormous responsibility of leading his people into exile, ensuring their safety and well-being in an unfamiliar land. Approximately 80,000 Tibetans followed him through the perilous journey across the Himalayas, facing starvation, harsh weather conditions, and a lack of resources.

I often think about the sheer determination and resilience required for such an undertaking. Upon arriving in India, His Holiness worked relentlessly to resettle Tibetan refugees. Recognizing the need for education and community, he requested Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to establish separate schools for Tibetan refugee children.

In 1960, the first Tibetan school in Mussoorie was founded, followed by another in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh. These schools became sanctuaries of learning and cultural preservation for Tibetan children. We, as Tibetans, should be eternally grateful for His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s dedication to ensuring our cultural identity and educational opportunities.

Building Strong Communities

His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s vision extended far beyond education; it encompassed the establishment of a resilient and self-sustaining Tibetan exile community. Many younger generations and Tibetans who arrived in India after the 1980s and 1990s may not fully grasp the monumental efforts and struggles that went into building this community.

I have heard stories from my elders about the immense difficulties they faced in establishing a new life in an unfamiliar land. The conditions were harsh, resources were scarce, and they had to start from scratch. Yet, with unwavering determination and a strong sense of unity, they laid the foundation for what would become a thriving exile community.

His Holiness played a pivotal role in establishing the Tibetan exile government, now known as the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), which provided a structured and organized approach to managing the needs of Tibetan refugees. This government ensured that the rights and well-being of Tibetans were prioritized and that their voices were heard on the international stage.

Without the establishment of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the preservation of Tibetan identity, culture, and language would not have been possible. His Holiness played a pivotal role in founding the Tibetan exile government, now known as the CTA, which created a structured and organized framework to address the needs of Tibetan refugees. It prioritized their rights and well-being while ensuring that their voices were heard on the global stage.

However, within the Tibetan community, there are individuals who often challenge the very existence of the CTA, without fully understanding the critical role it has played in keeping Tibetan identity alive for decades. Without the CTA’s efforts, the survival and recognition of Tibetan culture and language might have been far more precarious.

Furthermore, His Holiness was instrumental in the creation of 53 Tibetan settlements across India, Nepal, and Bhutan. These settlements were not just places to live; they became centers of cultural preservation, economic activity, and social cohesion. His tireless efforts to secure land and resources, often through diplomatic negotiations and appeals to international organizations, were crucial in making these settlements a reality.

Under the guidance of His Holiness the Dalai lama, the elder generation of Tibetan exiles worked tirelessly to build homes, schools, monasteries, and community centers within these settlements. They labored in fields, engaged in trade, and set up small businesses, all while preserving our rich cultural heritage. The sense of community and mutual support was a testament to their resilience and dedication.

Many younger generations may take for granted the current stability and prosperity of the Tibetan exile community. They may not realize the sacrifices made by their parents and grandparents, who endured tremendous hardships to ensure a better future for their children. The struggles of the elder generation were not just physical but also emotional and psychological, as they navigated the trauma of displacement and loss while striving to rebuild their lives.

It is essential to acknowledge and honor the hard work and perseverance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the elder generation. Their collective efforts have created a strong and vibrant Tibetan community in exile, one that continues to thrive and inspire future generations. By understanding the challenges and sacrifices of the past, the younger generation can better appreciate the privileges and opportunities they enjoy today.

Garnering International Support

The success of the Tibetan exile community can also be attributed to the relentless international advocacy of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He reached out to the global community, appealing to the United Nations and world leaders, resulting in several resolutions that highlighted the plight of Tibetans. His persistent efforts ensured that the Tibetan cause remained in the global consciousness, securing international support and aid for Tibetan refugees.

The Success of Tibetan Exiles

Today, almost every Tibetan born after 1970 in exile has received an education, thanks to the tireless efforts of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. His unwavering dedication to education has empowered this generation, enabling them to read, write, and thrive in exile. His legacy is evident in the success and resilience of the Tibetan Diaspora, making them one of the most successful refugee communities in the world.

Unfortunately, many current parents fail to impart this deep sense of gratitude for His Holiness to their children. As a result, many children, especially those born in the Western world, lack an understanding of the immense contributions of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. I have witnessed many children questioning why they should be grateful for everything they have now. To them, His Holiness may appear merely as a spiritual leader, unaware of the pivotal role he played in enabling their parents to walk shoulder to shoulder with people from any other country.

The leadership of His Holiness the Dalai Lama has been crucial in shaping the Tibetan community. His tireless efforts have ensured that Tibetans in exile not only survive but thrive. The younger generation must recognize and appreciate his contributions, understanding that without His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan people would not be where they are today.

It is essential for every Tibetan to remember his contributions and teach future generations about his selfless dedication. Despite the challenges, His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s unwavering support has made the Tibetan people one of the most successful refugee communities in the world. Tibetans should be eternally grateful for his leadership and continue to honor his legacy.
